The fun, the adventure, the possibility…it was gone. Just like that.
Gone were the days of reading for enjoyment, for fun, for escape, for adventure. Reading was now for the exclusive purpose of educational, historical, and emotional development. And if I were lucky, it would be slightly less boring than a dental exam. They do. There are things that need to be learned, disciplines that must be practiced, worldviews that need to be understood, and work that needs to be completed.
And once you get the hang of it, learning can be fun. After all, I enjoy using history, science, culture, and geographical tidbits in my books.

Because eventually, I found my own magic when studying all of those things. But frankly, as a kid, I would have liked an easier transition. I remember all of this, and I remember how I felt. And that is why I enjoy writing middle grade fiction.
